Modern medicine is increasingly turning to transplants and artificial organs to replace diseased organs. This program introduces several spectacular innovations in this scientific field of bionics. We learn how an artificial hand is designed so that it moves with almost as much dexterity as the human hand; the cochlear implant, an artificial ear capable of reproducing extremely subtle sounds, represents a revolutionary new means of treating deafness; and temporary artificial hearts are being successfully implanted in patients waiting to receive a new heart.
